A tribute to the women who gave volume to our voices.

I love this quote by Maya  Angelou: “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”

The feminist movement has given us some truly inspiring figures who have worked hard to make the world more equal for women.

In our fight for equity, there have been women that are now known all over the world.  Helen Keller, Marie Curie, to Gloria Steinem and more recently Tarana Burke.

I realized however that most of the names I knew were from the cultures I had lived in, or I knew of them because of the languages I spoke – English, French and Hindi -  but my knowledge of contributions made by women of other cultures was limited.

In the fight for equal rights there are also many forgotten figures…for every woman who gained some kind recognition, many have also labored in the background. Some of the names on this list might be well-known to some people, but most are not household names – at least not outside their own countries and cultures.

The women on this list have left their mark in the fields of education, writing, science, and legislation, and yet others paved the way for future generations by daring to go after their dreams and being the “First-woman-to…”

This post is to pay tribute to some of those lesser-known women who have contributed to the ongoing fight for female equality.  We wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate their significant contributions and to honor their legacy. Of course, this is just a tiny sampling and I can think of so many more names for our next edition - so if you feel like we missed someone that you would like to see on this list - tell us about them!
